Is Selling and Art or a Science? |
|
It is very tempting to believe that the process of selling is pure art and beyond any rational explantion of what makes the difference between a good and bad sales person. This is surprising really because effective sales people are superb at something that they sometimes believe can't apply to themsleves and that is the observation of human behaviour. If good sales people have a skill that can make them successful then surely observing the behaviour of effective sales people should give clues that others can learn from and make them successful too!
The common impression many people hold of sales people is that they are deceptive, manipulative, and self interested. As any sales executive with business to business exeprience knows this simply won't wash with customers you see time after time.
OK so their might not be a formula that applies to every situation like you'd find with sciences like physics and chemistry but you will find general ways of behaving that produce more success than others and that is stuff of social science.
I guess most of us would agree that Selling is a bit of both.

Yesterday all servers in the U.S. went out on strike in a bid to get more RAM and better CPUs. A spokes person said that the need for better RAM was due to some fool increasing the front-side bus speed. In future, busses will be told to slow down in residential motherboards.
